Coffee is a very popular drink around the world. It comes from a plant called the coffee plant. This plant grows small, red fruits. People call these fruits 'coffee cherries'. Inside each cherry, there are usually two small seeds. These seeds are the coffee beans. First, workers pick the red fruits from the plants. Then, they remove the seeds from the fruit. The beans are washed with clean water. After washing, the beans must be dry. People put them under the sun for many days. Next, a special machine heats the beans. This is called roasting. Roasting gives the beans their brown color and nice smell. Finally, people use hot water with the brown beans to make the dark liquid we drink.
