The primary objective is to enhance the quality of urban services and life for its citizens by using this data to manage assets, resources, and services efficiently. This is achieved by integrating information and communication technology (ICT) across diverse urban systems, including transportation networks, energy grids, and public safety infrastructure. Proponents of this model argue that such a data-driven approach leads to greater operational efficiency, improved environmental sustainability, and more responsive urban management. For instance, real-time traffic data can be used to mitigate congestion, while smart grids can optimize energy consumption. However, the implementation of smart city technologies is not without its significant challenges. Foremost among these are concerns regarding data privacy and the potential for widespread surveillance. The vast amount of personal data collected raises critical questions about who owns it and how it is protected. Furthermore, there is a substantial risk of exacerbating the digital divide, a situation where individuals without sufficient technological access or digital literacy are unable to benefit from these advancements and may even be marginalized.
