Coffee is a popular drink around the world. It comes from a plant. The plant grows a small, red fruit called a coffee cherry. When the cherries are ready, people pick them by hand. Inside each cherry, there are two seeds. These seeds are the coffee beans. After picking, the beans must be dry. People often put the beans in the sun. When the beans are dry, their color is green. The next step is very important. A special machine roasts the green beans with high heat. This process turns the beans brown and creates the coffee flavor. Finally, people grind the roasted beans into a powder. We mix this powder with hot water to make the drink we know as coffee. It is a long journey from the plant to your cup.
