Coastal erosion, a long-standing natural process, is becoming increasingly problematic due to human activity and climate change. Rising sea levels, driven by thermal expansion and melting glaciers, exacerbate the problem. While natural coastal defenses, such as sand dunes and mangrove forests, can absorb wave energy and mitigate erosion, these are often degraded or removed altogether for development or aquaculture. The construction of seawalls and groynes, intended to halt erosion in specific areas, frequently ends up diverting wave energy elsewhere, leading to increased erosion down the coastline. If comprehensive strategies are not implemented, coastal communities face displacement and economic hardship. These strategies must incorporate not only engineering solutions, but also ecosystem-based adaptation, such as restoring natural habitats and managing land use. The situation is further complicated by the fact that accurate prediction of long-term erosion rates remains a significant challenge. Understanding these complex interdependencies is crucial for developing sustainable coastal management policies that will protect both human populations and fragile coastal ecosystems. The current trajectory points towards a future where proactive, rather than reactive, measures are indispensable.
